A Very Potter Review

A few days ago, Starkid released their third and final Harry Potter musical parody: A Very Potter Senior Year. As a huge fan of both A Very Potter Musical and A Very Potter Sequel (and of Starkid in general), I was extremely excited to watch it. However, while I thought it was very good, I also think it’s the weakest of the three.

For one thing, there was nowhere near enough Lauren Lopez. She is in the play, and her portrayal of Draco Malfoy is as hilarious and weirdly adorable as ever, but her role did seem significantly smaller than it was in the other two plays. I was also disappointed that they didn’t follow up on the romance between Draco and Luna Lovegood that was hinted at in A Very Potter Sequel, especially since Evanna Lynch herself (!!!!!) played the part of Luna in AVPSY. I’m sure that tons of hilarious moments could have come from that.

Bonnie Gruesen, unfortunately, did not return to play Hermione Granger. Instead, the role is filled by Meredith Stepien. She did a decent job, but I did miss Bonnie a lot. (On the plus side, Darren Criss returned to play Harry! Yay!)

The songs, while not bad, are not as memorable as the ones in AVPM or AVPS. Honestly, I can’t remember how any of them go. They disappeared from my memory as soon as they ended. Well, that is except for Tonight the School is Mine, that’s a fantastic song and it’s been stuck in my head since I first heard it. The reprise of Get Back to Hogwarts was also good, but I don’t count that one because it’s technically from AVPM, not AVPSY.

I got excited at the appearance of Gilderoy Lockhart, but unfortunately he wasn’t as funny as could he have been. I mean, it’s Gilderoy freakin’ Lockhart! There’s so much you can do with that character, so many ways to make fun of him! Not that he didn’t have his funny moments, I was just expecting more of them.

I was also disapponted that, although they gave Ron a song about taking action and becoming the hero rather than the sidekick… he didn’t actually become the hero. All he did was find Harry and get him to come back and be the hero. Again. I was hoping Ron would get his own bad ass moment, but nope.

Complaints aside, however, I did still love AVPSY. It’s still full of very funny (and very meta) jokes, surprisingly emotional scenes, a tear-jerking ending and amazing acting and singing. They even got Evanna Lynch to play Luna, which is just so awesome I can hardly stand it.

A Very Potter Sequel remains my favorite, but A Very Potter Senior Year was a wonderful end to the trilogy, and I know that, like AVPM and AVPS, I’ll be rewatching it many, many times.
