SpongeBob Reviews: Season 6 (Spongicus/Suction Cup Symphony)

Plankton opens a gladiator coliseum where the Chum Bucket used to be, promising the Bikini Bottomites free bloodshed entertainment. Everyone goes to the coliseum, leaving the Krusty Krab empty. Mr. Krabs, SpongeBob and Squidward go to the colisseum to see what the fuss is about. For the first act (if you can call it that), Plankton releases a Sea Lion. I mean like a giant fish with a lion head, similar to the Sea Bear in The Camping Episode, not these things:

Anyway, the poor sucker who has to face the Sea Lion is Patrick (sausages have been strung around his neck to attract the Sea Lion). SpongeBob jumps into the arena to save Patrick from being eaten. Meanwhile, Plankton is attempting to sell people chum for ten dollars. The chum tastes disgusting and everyone tries to leave, but Plankton won’t let them. Back in the arena, SpongeBob realizes that the Sea Lion only wants the sausages, so he throws them away from Patrick. The sausages land on Plankton and the Sea Lion chases him out of the coliseum. Everyone goes back to the Krusty Krab, where Mr. Krabs is now using the Sea Lion to threaten customers into spending more money. lol extorsion is fun.

I liked this episode, most of the jokes got a laugh out of me and I loved the plot due to my love of Ancient Rome (well, you know what I mean). However, I can’t help feeling like they could have done a lot more with this plot. The ending in particular was rather anti-climactic. Still, for what it is, it’s a good episode, and a really creative Plankton episode. It’s made even more unique by the fact that this is one of very few Plankton episodes that doesn’t revolve around him trying to get the formula.

By the way, check out how cute Plankton looks in his toga:

Can we all just agree that Plankton is adorable?

This episode starts with Squidward practicing his clarinet. As usual, he sounds terrible (SpongeBob actually thinks the noises are due to Squidward being sick, hehe). Across the street construction workers are putting up a billboard that says the Bikini Bottom Orchestra is looking for original compositions. When Squidward sees this, he hurries to make one himself (the compositions are due tomorrow). SpongeBob and Patrick offer to help, but Squidward refuses. Squidward spends all day and night writing his “masterpiece”, but SpongeBob and Patrick keep making noise outside. When Squidward is finally done the next day, he enters his composition and wins, which means the orchestra will play his piece while he directs them. It isn’t until the night of the concert that he realizes that he had written down everything he heard SpongeBob and Patrick doing yesterday, so they’re in the concert too… doing everything they were doing yesterday. When it’s all over, Squidward is embarrassed, thinking that the concert was a disaster, but the audience loved it, and Squidward is praised as a musical genius.

Wow, another episode where Squidward wins. It’s nice, but I hope they don’t start overdoing it. The reason why Squidward winning at the end of Band Geeks was so special was because, at that point, it had never happened before, and it didn’t happen again until House Fancy. I’m happy to see Squidward win, but it shouldn’t happen too often, only every now and then.

Anyway, this was a good episode. SpongeBob and Patrick were both really funny in this one.  Don’t hear me say that very often, do you? I especially liked this exchange:

SpongeBob: Hey, Patrick, I think you should see a doctor.
Patrick: I can’t see a doctor. My job doesn’t provide me with health insurance.
SpongeBob: What job is that?
Patrick: Exactly.

Patrick being witty? Awesome. SpongeBob and Patrick actually don’t have much dialogue in this episode, it’s mostly visual humor, but it’s done really well. The concert scene at the end is particularly funny. And then there’s this…

A reference to rectal exams. In a SpongeBob episode. That’s almost worse/better than the “Don’t drop the soap” joke in Gary Takes a Bath.

A good plot, a great ending, funny, and dirty jokes. What more could I ask for?

You know what’s weird? Spongicus was written by Casey Alexander and Zeus Cervas; I guess they decided to actually try for once instead of sticking to their god awful status quo. Well, it paid off, because Spongicus is actually my second favorite Season 6 episode. The only one ranking higher that season is the other episode reviewed, Suction Cup Symphony. This one was written by Luke Brookshier & Nate Cash, the latter was behind the worst Season 6 episode “The Splinter”. And do you know what’s REALLY weird? Both episodes were co-written by Richard Pursel (he would team up with Casey and Zeus to write the two worst episodes of the series, A Pal for Gary and Pet Sitter Pat), so I guess he decided to try as well instead of sticking to his usual stuff. It worked, because he was behind both of my favorite episodes of Season 6.

I’ve changed my mind about Casey and Zeus. I feel they are actually really good when they’re not being rushed, like they were in Seasons 6 and 7.
